Is this like a Silver ladder type of thing? im not rly familiar with the world of darkness so I tried to read up on it because im enjoying your comic so much. im only assuming that Amical is part of the Silver ladder cause of the whole recruiting seedlings thing.

@D3c3nd4n7: That...or he's ultimately the middle man. He finds and breaks in budding mages, gives them some basic training and hands them off to someone else.

@D3c3nd4n7: I'm really happy that we've inspired you to want to know more about WoD, but I'll say this right now, that any concept or group etc you need to know, we'll introduce and explain before we expect you to know it because this comic is very much meant to not exclude people who know nothing about it coming in.

If one DOES have a pretty good grounding in the Mage setting, or WoD in general, there might be some extra depth they gain. But again, meant for introducing people to stuff rather than expecting anyone to come in knowing it :)

@ChibiSilverWings: oh cool thx for that :) nice to know its all gonna be explained. Though i had quite a bit of fun reading up on the Mage : the awakening. im sure the background knowledge will help me apreciate the comic more since reading up i got to learn about the ruling and inferior arcana which explained why some magics would be harder for others :)

ChibiSilverWings, February 22nd, 2014, 3:31 pm     Reply

@D3c3nd4n7: Yeah! It's nice to get more insight on all that stuff, eventually our lovely Seedlings will be learning more about each arcana and what they can do too. Not to mention learning about the world at large, which has a ton of other systems to deal with too haha. I wouldn't want to assume everyone reading knew all the rules of all the non-mundane beings and I'm pretty confident we'll be able to explain things well so everyone can read it with or without a large WoD understanding when they start. Though it's fun to get more people interested in it! It's like getting to spread the word about something cool to lots of new people.

I'm having a similar experience to D3c3nd4n7. I discovered this recently through a comment on Reddit. (The Helix Fossil says hi) Since finding it I powered through the entire archive, and then searched around about the World of Darkness to try and sate my appetite for more. I would love to get into playing a Mage game, but seeing as I don't have the people (or the books) I'll settle for reading (Watching? Interacting with?) morphE. This is some great work you're doing, keep it up!

@MoroseMoros: Good to hear from other Helix devotees. May his shell spiral around us all in a protective embrace.

Thanks for taking so much time to come and check us out, we all have Alexis to thank for that! Honestly, it's so great to hear people have been enjoying it so much that they're looking for more after finishing the archive. Thanks!

Yeah finding a pickup game of any WoD setting is a little harder than finding a D&D game since it's played a lot less, and old World of Darkness is better loved than new World of Darkness, Mage is far less popular than Vampire, etc etc, plus they just released some even NEWER rules too!

BUT most larger cities actually have LARPs going via Mind's Eye Society. MES is basically the US branch of the official worldwide canon of LARPs all played in small groups in person. You can find the site with a quick google. I know for sure the Vampire's have Princes with groups all over the place, we have one here in Grand Rapids who I've yet to actually go meet.

Mage, being smaller, is only in some cities, but all the people I've met at Gencon at the Mage LARPs were tons of fun and were really friendly. But I know LARPs can be super intimidating for some people, especially someone new. Believe me I have wimped out several times trying to do them... though all my successful times have been great.

But hey, if you have some gaming buddies in any capacity, I'd totally urge you to just snag the plain old new World of Darkness source book and take it for a spin as plain humans in a sorta horror setting. The think I like about the system vs a D&D type one, is that the rules are really loose. The books very consistently emphasize a "DM/ST makes the rules". Which is amazing if you have a GM/ST who you trust to be making things awesome. I like the fact that you don't need to know every little detail to play a fun session of the game.

Anyway, I'm grateful to hear you'll be sticking with us, thanks again!

I'm sorry to you all fans, for being made of wall of text. I can't help it. Jesus.

MoroseMoros, February 23rd, 2014, 2:51 am     Reply

@ChibiSilverWings: Wow, lots of good advice there. Thanks! As for LARPs, I might not be a good fit. My personality seems pretty close to Curio generally. Less people, more comfortable. Still, I'll look into it. Maybe I can branch out a bit.

There's no need to apologize for making a wall of text, it just shows that you had a lot to say and you cared enough to say it! Why, I have even heard tales of people in days long past making walls of text hundreds or thousands of times as large, and inscribing them onto thin sheets made of dead trees! Can you believe that barbarism?!

ChibiSilverWings, February 23rd, 2014, 5:09 am     Reply

@MoroseMoros: No shame in being more of a fan of small groups, I know I mostly am, though the type of crowd can make a difference for me. Generally around table top gaming people I have a lot more to talk about, so I don't feel as nervous. But I totally understand.

I tend to be the most... wordy of my co-authors, and I just never want to assume it's something people want to read XD But hey, if you want to ask anything about the game etc, I'll do my best to answer (in a few less paragraphs) as long as it's not spoilers.

Hmmm... Thin sheets of text walls you say? With no images or noises to accompany them? That sounds fake.

@ChibiSilverWings: Thank you for the offer, but I believe I've found everything I want to know for the moment. The White Wolf wiki was rather helpful in outlining the various bits of lore I was curious about. It was mostly just the different Paths and Arcana, what exactly they had power over, what powers they gained as they went up the ranks, etc. Just the things my imagination wanted to chew on.

@ChibiSilverWings: You're the most verbose? If Craig hears you making that claim, he's going to erupt into a word volcano explosion.

MoroseMoros, February 23rd, 2014, 7:19 pm     Reply

Would that be War of the Words or Word War 1? Maybe we should get Word Wrestling Entertainment to oversee it, or we'll have to call in the Word Wildlife Fund to help rebuild after the nounclear bombs start dropping! Everything will be burning and people will crowd the streets screaming "Oh the verbosity!"

If anyone needs me I'll be throwing myself out of a window in a tall building.

@MoroseMoros: ... I like you Moros. You have earned my seal of approval. Alexis I decree this one earns a Moros badge for great displays in the art of word choice and pun-fu.

@ChibiSilverWings: Yeah, I had a question about the Path badges. How exactly does one get them, if the method becomes feasible? Is it just an authorial thing? The chess pieces and gold collar I have a good idea about, but these ones vex me to no end.

Shadowednavi, February 24th, 2014, 12:29 am     Reply

@Don Quixotes: Oooh, I can answer that one! And the answer is.... we're working on it XD It was originally a personality test, but the website we were hosting it on borked pretty early into the comic.

We're in the process of making a new one~

ChibiSilverWings, February 24th, 2014, 1:30 am     Reply

@Don Quixotes: Note, it was a HIDDEN personality test. Like our secrets that earn you Chess pieces. :D

At some point I'll probably make some other badges, something like rewarding someone for acts of bravery or awesomeness. There's also one for meeting us at a convention that no one has atm :)

@ChibiSilverWings: A badge? Oh my, I'm honored! I don't know what to say! Umm, I would like to thank the Academy, and my directors, and the film crew... No, wrong speech. I would like to thank Amical, for always believing in me, or at least waiting a little while before pulling the trigger... Yes, I know you want to celebrate later in your room, but I'm in a committed relationship... Do you know what "monogamous" means? A-anyway, I would also like to thank the people who made the box I was shipped here in. It was remarkably comfortable for what it was, and the craftsmanship was superior. I also need to thank whoever carved "MADMAN" into my forehead. I was actually going to get that exact thing tattooed, but seems like you saved me the trouble. Last but not least, I would like to thank the entire team behind morphE for crafting a wonderful, mentally stimulating story, and for being such a friendly group of people.

On a slightly more serious note, I also love personality tests, so I look forward to that getting fixed eventually.

@MoroseMoros: This one's a keeper. And by "keeper," I mean, "Put them back in the box, I want only the finest adorning my basement."

I knew about the WOD before but...
I never actually had any of the books until recently, I picked up the core when I got the chance, and I'm planing to go back and get two of the supernatural books, I know the first one's going to be Mage, pretty sure the other one's going to be Werewolf. Any extra books that could be considered "must haves?"

Oh, and, I eagerly await the day the personality test is fixed, so I can hunt it down and see what I get.

Alexis_Royce, February 24th, 2014, 10:17 pm     Reply

@The_Hyena_King: Having the core and a setting or two means you're pretty much set, as far as starting off goes.

If you really want to dive in once you have experience playing, 'The God Machine' includes a rules update that I adore. It tailors the game in ways that had me oohing and ahhing the entire time. It may be a little dry if you don't plan to GM, but once you have a handle on the basics, it's positively dreamy.

I would also recommend Demon: The Descent, which has a free quickstart over here: That will be my next setting once my current campaign is done.

burningtyger, February 24th, 2014, 10:35 pm     Reply

I knew a little about WOD my self just a bit, but not in as much depth as now; and yes, the wiki is very useful. I also just happened to find PDFs of the Mage books online... :P :P BTW you'd better fix that "thrysus" typo, it's even gotten into the TV tropes character sheets.

ChibiSilverWings, February 24th, 2014, 10:39 pm     Reply

@The_Hyena_King: My favorite is Werewolf.

But it depends a lot on what sort of themes interest you. I'd peek around at the concepts of each setting and choose whichever sounds like it would be cool/fun for you. All of them have a certain degree of social politics, but Vampire and Mage and heavy on that end, ESPECIALLY Vampire, and generally that stuff isn't as interesting to me. Promethean if you like the idea of Frankenstein's monster, a created creature who everyone just instinctively hates, but is longing to become "human". Changeling if you like your characters sorta more on the anthro-y side and having a really really miserable backstory. Hunter if you want someone fighting off those supernatural menaces. And Geist for ghost stuff. And there's newcomer Mummy for some back from the dead flair and Demon as Alexis mentioned, though I've not gotten to do a lot with those yet.

ChibiSilverWings, February 24th, 2014, 10:46 pm     Reply

@burningtyger: Fixed. The main issue is that in group for 2 years we pronounced it "THREE-SUS" which is wrong, but for me it's super ingrained. And that probably makes us all typo the heck out of it. Obrimos, Moros, Acanthus, and Mastigos are all so easy for me to type without thinking but... dangit Thyrsus.

@burningtyger: I know the word meaning, it's more just I think a sentence verbally in my head then type is out, so if the word is being said wrong in my head I have a tendency to spell it wrong. It's something I'll try to be more diligent about though.

Also, we do award them by hand about once a month and have to manually code them for each person so sometimes we miss stuff or code it incorrectly.
